Building Africa’s Scientific Future: The Work of Edward Kakonge
Edward Kakonge was one of Uganda’s early scientific pioneers, contributing to the rise of genetics and agricultural research in East Africa during the 1960s and 1970s. Working through Makerere University—then one of Africa’s leading science institutions—Kakonge focused on microbial and crop genetics, helping to introduce modern genetic principles into East African science. His work supported regional efforts to improve soil health, strengthen crop resilience, and understand how microorganisms adapt to changing environments.
